The best VPN for the Netherlands in 2026
There is no best VPN for everyone, only a best VPN for what you want to do with it. Below we put eight services side by side on the points that really matter. For each profile we give a clear recommendation, and the renewal price is included, because that is exactly where the difference lies that most comparisons leave out.
If you take out a subscription through links on this page, we may receive a commission. It costs you nothing extra and does not change our order or verdict. How that works · How we review.
The short answer
Do not feel like reading everything? For most Dutch households Surfshark is the sensible buy, because for one of the lowest entry prices you get unlimited devices and a twice-audited privacy policy. If you want the highest speed and the most reliable streaming and price matters less, NordVPN is the safe choice. If privacy comes first, Proton VPN. If you want to spend as little as possible over several years, Private Internet Access. Below we explain why.
All eight at a glance
The monthly price applies to the longest subscription the provider offers, so almost always two or three years paid upfront. The column next to it is what you pay once that term ends. That is the column where the money is.
| Service | Entry p/m | After term p/m | Devices | Jurisdiction | Money back |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private Internet Access | €1.79 | €1.94 | unlimited | United States | 30 days |
| PureVPN | €1.85 | €3.95 | 10 | British Virgin Islands | 31 days |
| IPVanish | €1.97 | €6.75 | unlimited | United States | 30 days |
| Surfshark | €2.49 | not published | unlimited | Netherlands | 30 days |
| CyberGhost | €2.49 | €5.39 | 7 | Romania | 45 days |
| ExpressVPN | €2.49 | €6.66 | 8 | British Virgin Islands | 30 days |
| NordVPN | €3.49 | €11.59 | 10 | Panama | 30 days |
| Proton VPN | €3.49 | not published | 10 | Switzerland | 30 days |
What the advertised price leaves out
All eight advertise the monthly amount of the longest subscription. That amount applies for one term. After that the subscription renews automatically at a rate that at most providers is two to three times as high. Calculate four years and the ranking really changes:
| Provider | Advertised p/m | Real p/m over 4 years | Total over 4 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private Internet Access | €1.79 | €1.82 | €87 |
| PureVPN | €1.85 | €2.77 | €133 |
| CyberGhost | €2.49 | €3.82 | €183 |
| ExpressVPN | €2.49 | €4.23 | €203 |
| IPVanish | €1.97 | €4.36 | €209 |
| NordVPN | €3.49 | €7.03 | €338 |
At €1.97, IPVanish looks like the third cheapest, but over four years it drops to second to last. NordVPN costs almost four times as much as Private Internet Access. That does not make NordVPN a bad choice, but the comparison becomes a different one from the one on the advertising banners. The full working-out is in Wat kost een VPN echt? (Dutch)
There is one practical way out: when you sign up, immediately set a calendar reminder two weeks before the renewal date. Then you can cancel, switch to a provider with an introductory discount, or ask customer service to keep the entry rate. That last one works more often than you think.
Our recommendations per profile
For most households: Surfshark
Surfshark combines one of the lowest entry prices with something the cheaper competitors do not have: no limit on the number of simultaneous devices. One subscription covers all the phones, laptops, tablets and TVs in the house. The no-logs policy has been examined twice by Deloitte, in 2023 and again in June 2025, and the servers run on RAM so nothing is left behind after a restart.
The drawbacks belong here too. Latency is higher than with NordVPN, which is noticeable in online gaming. The Dutch base falls within the 9 and 14 Eyes cooperation; for an ordinary consumer's threat model that matters little, but it should be a conscious choice. And the renewal price is nowhere on the pricing page, so you sign for something whose sequel you do not know. More in the Surfshark review (Dutch).

For speed and streaming: NordVPN
NordVPN consistently ends up at the top of independent speed comparisons, thanks to its own NordLynx protocol based on WireGuard. Watching Dutch services abroad works more reliably than with almost any competitor, and in the ongoing cat-and-mouse game with streaming services NordVPN usually restores blocked access fastest. The no-logs policy has now been examined six times; the most recent examination by Deloitte ran from 10 November to 12 December 2025.
Two caveats. In 2018 one server was broken into via a data centre partner in Finland; no user data leaked, but NordVPN only reported the incident more than a year later. And at €3.49 NordVPN has the highest entry price of the eight, with the highest renewal price we came across: €11.59 per month. Read the full review (Dutch) before you sign.

For those who put privacy first: Proton VPN
Proton VPN comes from the makers of Proton Mail, falls under Swiss law and, alongside Private Internet Access, is the only one with all its apps open source. Since 2022 the company has been placed with the Proton Foundation, a non-profit foundation, so there is no investor who could force a different business model later. Since 2022 the apps have been audited annually by the Polish firm Securitum.
The free version is also one of the few free VPNs we dare to mention: limited in servers and speed, but with no data cap, no ads and no selling of your data. For streaming Proton is less consistent than Surfshark or NordVPN, and as with Surfshark the renewal price is not stated anywhere. More in the Proton VPN review (Dutch) and in our guide to free VPNs (Dutch).

For the lowest cost over several years: Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access is not only the cheapest at the entry price, it is also the only provider whose price stays almost the same after renewal: from €1.79 to €1.94. Over four years it therefore costs €87, against €338 for NordVPN. The no-logs policy has also been tested not just on paper but in practice: in several American court cases the company could not hand over user data because there was none. Deloitte examined the policy in 2022, 2024 and late 2025.
On the other side, PIA is an American company and so falls within the 5 Eyes, streaming is less consistent than with the top services, and the app shows many settings that can put beginners off. The review (Dutch) goes deeper into that.

For the longest cooling-off period: CyberGhost
CyberGhost is the only one with a 45-day money-back guarantee instead of 30, and has a large server network with dedicated streaming servers. The entry price of €2.49 is sharp; the renewal to €5.39 more than doubles it. The limit of seven simultaneous devices is the lowest in this overview. See the CyberGhost review (Dutch).

For the lowest price, with a caveat: PureVPN
PureVPN costs €1.85 per month and has something rare in this price class: a continuing no-logs audit by KPMG, in which the auditor may check unannounced at any time. The caveat belongs here honestly: in 2017 it emerged that PureVPN could in fact hand over connection data in an American criminal case. The policy has demonstrably been revised since, but if you would rather choose a service without that history, stick with Surfshark or Private Internet Access. Streaming is fair, not top. The whole story is in the PureVPN review (Dutch).

Who owns whom
The VPN market looks broader than it is. Of the eight services above, five are owned by two companies. Kape Technologies owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access. Nord Security owns NordVPN and, since the merger, Surfshark too; the brands operate separately but have the same owner. If you compare those two, you are comparing two products from the same house. That is no reason to reject them, but it is something to know when a comparison site presents you with "the two best options".
Kape also has a history: the company was previously called Crossrider and then made money with software that injected advertisements. The audits of the three VPNs give no reason for distrust, but anyone who takes this seriously should weigh it. Of the eight, only Proton VPN, PureVPN and IPVanish are not tied to one of these two groups.
What we look at
We weigh five things, and we weigh them in this order.
Privacy weighs most. Not what a provider promises, but what an outside party has checked: which auditor, when, and whether the report is public. We also look at the jurisdiction and whether the servers run on RAM.
Speed we assess on the basis of independent lab measurements, not our own tests; we have no test lab and do not pretend to. What we do look at is whether there are Dutch servers and which protocol is used.
Price we assess over the full term, so including renewal. A provider that does not publish its renewal price scores lower with us on that, even if the price turns out to be reasonable afterwards.
Ease of use is about the apps: how many platforms, how clear, and whether basic features such as the kill switch can be found without a manual.
Streaming we assess cautiously, because it changes fastest of all five. What works today may be blocked next month. Our streaming guide (Dutch) explains what you can realistically expect. The full method is in our methodology.
One honest warning
Almost every VPN advertises a huge discount that is about to end. That discount will still be there next week. And a VPN does less than the marketing suggests: it hides your IP address from the sites you visit and encrypts your traffic towards the VPN server, but it does not make you anonymous, does not protect you against phishing or malware, and does not help if you simply stay logged in to services that already know you. What a VPN does and does not do is in Wat is een VPN? (Dutch), and whether it is allowed in the Netherlands at all you can read in Is een VPN legaal? (Dutch)
Finally, a free VPN you do not know: if the product is free and the company has no clear business model, you are probably paying with your data.
Frequently asked questions
Which VPN is fastest? In independent lab measurements NordVPN consistently comes out fastest, followed by Surfshark and ExpressVPN. On an average Dutch connection you rarely notice the difference; on a gigabit fibre line you do.
Do I need a VPN for Dutch TV abroad? Inside the EU usually not: the portability rules make sure paid services simply travel with you. Outside the EU you do. See Watch Dutch TV abroad.
Can I share one subscription with my family? Yes. Surfshark, Private Internet Access and IPVanish have no limit on simultaneous devices; NordVPN, Proton VPN and PureVPN allow ten and CyberGhost seven.
Is a more expensive VPN safer? No. Of the eight above, the cheapest, Private Internet Access, has the best-substantiated no-logs policy of all, because it has been tested in court cases. Price says something about marketing budget, not about security.

Our verdict
For by far most people the choice is between Surfshark and NordVPN, and that choice is not about quality but about where you put your money: unlimited devices for a low price, or the highest speed and the most proven streaming for roughly double over four years. Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can simply try it. If you want to play safe on privacy, Proton VPN. If you want purely the lowest cost, Private Internet Access.
Whatever you choose: look at the renewal price before you sign, and set that calendar reminder. Put the eight services side by side yourself in the comparison tool, or first read NordVPN vs Surfshark (Dutch) if you already know it is between those two.
